My Partner

At the start of the year, I got a partner Ramsha Rizwan, who unfortunately dropped Media Studies because her father was sick and he had to pass through various surgeries. I got this information on 30 th April 2013. Now I will be handling the blog alone and I will be posting all the work.

Rear window, a direction by Alfred Hitchcock was released in 1954. It was written by John Michael Hayes. Originally released by Paramount Pictures, the film stars James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter and Raymond Burr. It was screened at 1954 Venice Film Festival.
There was a man(James Stewart), who had a broken leg, his pastime was to peek out of the window, with his binoculars in houses of the neighbours living in the apartment across the road. There lived a lady dancer named Miss Torso, who kept on dancing in his room, a lonely women named Miss Lonelyheart, a song writer, several married couples, a middle-aged sculptor, Raymond Burr, a wholesale jewellery salesman with a bedridden wife. Raymond Burr was one of the main character in this movie who lived with his wife. Apparently in this movie he had an argument with his wife and he plans to kill his wife. Grace Kelly was his girlfriend and therefore he discussed about the murder with her. The day he was attempting the murder, James Stewart was looking out his window when suddenly he noticed that Raymond Burr has murdered his wife. After the murder, Raymond Burr saw that James Stewart has seen him killing his wife. After this the chase for James Stewart was started. Raymond Burr tried a lot to kill him but at last, he was arrested by the police.

The suspense, thrill and enjoyment was great to watch and this helped the audience to stick with the movie and made them watch the movie till the end.

My Research

                                    Creating Suspense

While searching for my genre I found out few ways to create a suspenseful scene. Here goes some following tricks to make a great suspense scene.

The Silhouette:
Lights can be a great factor in creating a suspenseful scene. They can be used to create a silhouettes, it is a film technique often used in film noir to increase the suspense. Its example can be that if the director wants the character to walk in the fog, the light is to be created behind the fog. This will create the shadow or a silhouette of an actor. This will keep the audience guessing about the character.

The Horror of it all:
While making the Horror film lighting is a key factor to add suspense. One of the main way is to have the main character main lit, but the background should be coverd in shadows. This helps to keep the audience on edge, to keep them unaware of when the monster or the killer will jump out. "The Blair Witch Project" used a single light to create an all verbal scene of suspense. Within the scene, the main character speaks directly to a camera she holds, apologizing for the situation she has created. As a tear falls from her eye, the right portion of her face is lit up, while the background rests in blackness. From the darkness, sounds are heard but nothing is seen. The total blackness of the background adds to the suspense of the scene.

Changing Light:
Using a coloured filter on your main light, and changing these fiters within a scene, can create unease and suspense within the audience. The movie natural born killers created many effects with the help of light.Toward the end of the film, Woody Harrelson, who plays a crazed killer, is being interviewed by Robert Downy Jr., who plays a Geraldo Rivera, like journalist. As the scene progresses, Downy begins to lose his temper, and the lighting on his face goes from normal to red. The audience isn't sure if Downy is going to snap or regain his calm. Within the scene, a red filter is used to place Downy's face in red light whenever he begins to lose his cool.

Rejected Idea

                                              Idea that I thought initially...
The idea that I first thought of in which my media teacher helped  me was as follows...
Scene 1:
Life of a lady will be shown. She will be shown on her way to the office and that her life is going on normally.
Shot 1:
The first scene will be shot in the car with a light background music and her relations with collegues will be shown.
Narrations:
In her office she will greet her collegues and then next scene will start.
Music/sound effect:
A very light music will be playing in the car.
Scene 2:
Her daughter's boyfriend will be shown. They will be together in a cafe. And suddenly the girl will be found dead and there will be sleeping pills beside her table. Now the mother gets after her daughter's boyfriend and attempt a murder.
Shot 2:
It will be shooted in a cafe and the girls house in which sucide and murder  will be shown.
Narrations:
The mother will be seeing her daughter's dead body and shouting 'wake up, Maya, wake up.' And then a murder of her daughter's boyfriend Haroon will be shown.
Music/sound effect:
No effect
Scene 3:
Just a clip of murders will be shown but the killer will not be reveled. Then the step for an ultimate murder will take place and her husband will be shown with another women. At the end the women will show the knife towards the camera as if killing/threating the audience.
Shot 3:
The ultimate murder will be written on the screen. The suspense will not be revealed in the trailer about the killer.
Music/sound effect:
There will be detective music in the background.
Movie names that I thought:
Killer, Saint/Sinner
